Colonial Counterpoints: Frantz Fanon, Jean-Paul Sartre and the Existential and Colonial Problem of the Other
Colonial Counterpoints: Frantz Fanon, Jean-Paul Sartre and the Existential and Colonial Problem of the Other
Abstract
This article analyzes the theoretical connection between Frantz Fanon and Jean-Paul Sartre. To achieve these ends, it explores the particularity of Fanon’s approach of the body and consciousness of the colonialized black people/negro, and its critical discussion of Sartre’s ontological perspective on the relationship between the beingin-itself and the being-for-others. It then explores the notions of transcendence and freedom that are frequent in the writings of both thinkers. Throughout the writing, a dialogue is attempted to point out the differences and similarities between Fanon and Sartre on the existential and colonial problem of the Other.
