Reflections on Public Policies in Health: Research, Citizen Participation and Management
Abstract
Introduction: Public policies are closely related to public health. However, this relationship is unknown by many professionals in the health area. Objective: The purpose of this article is to carry out a critical reflection on public policies in health, from the perspective of research, citizen participation and management. Results: After consulting the reference scientific sources, the following were described as topics: a) the fundamental characteristics of public policies, b) the reference framework of public policies, c) health as a universal right, d) the functions essentials of public health, e) public health policies and main opportunities in relation to the health approach and f) the pending challenges of public health in Latin America. Conclusion: It is evident that public policies play a determining factor in improving the health of populations. However, to achieve this goal, the participation of different social actors is required so that the entire population benefits and not just a particular sector.
