Medical Studies in Zulia: 17 Decades After its Foundation (1854-2024)

Abstract

The definitive beginning of medical studies in the state of Zulia took place on September 2, 1854, with the installation in the National College of Maracaibo of the first course of Medicine by Dr. Joaquín Esteva Parra, which was possible after two failed attempts in 1833 and 1846, respectively. Its students graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Medicine. Subsequently, the Guzman reforms empowered the institution to grant the degrees of Bachelor and Doctor of Medicine and other sciences, which precipitated the creation, opening and installation of the University of Zulia and its Faculty of Medical Sciences in 1891, raising medical education to university rank. This was momentarily truncated with the closure of the university in 1904, but after two attempts to reestablish the teaching of Medicine in 1910 and 1915, it was resumed with the reopening of the university in 1946 and the reinstallation of its respective Faculty in 1948.
