Abstract

In order to determine patient safety from the perspective of the health team at the Centro Clíni- co Quirúrgico Hospital del Día Chimbacalle-IESS, a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out, whose population census was made up of 92 health professionals. Data collection was performed using the Spanish version of the Patient Safety Questionnaire, made up of three sections with twelve dimensions and 42 items. The ques- tionnaire responses were recoded into three cate- gories: negative, neutral (indifferent) and positive. In the results it was observed that in the negative category the following items stood out: My supe- rior/boss ignores the patient safety problems that usually occur with 73%; If colleagues or superiors find out that you have made a mistake, they use it against you with 69%; there are enough personnel to face the workload with 64%; when work pressure increases, my superior/boss wants us to work fas- ter, even though patient safety may be put at risk with 60%; In this unit there are problems related to “Patient Safety” with 58%. Concluding that, among the professionals of the health team there is a lack of knowledge of the ways to notify adverse events, as well as a deficient training in safety culture. It is suggested to apply a management model for patient safety from the perspective of the health team, which allows control mechanisms and monitoring of work processes between service units, prioritizing the measures to be taken to improve patient safety by improving the quality of care.
