Antibacterial Activity of Culantro Leaves (Coriandrum sativum L.).
Abstract
Coriandrum sativum (culantro) is a plant traditionally used for the treatment of microbial infections. This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts from its leaves against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli (ATCC 27852, 25923, and 25922). The leaves were collected, dried, ground (≤1 mm), and extracted by ultrasound with ethanol in proportions of 50:50 and 90:10. The extracts were concentrated by rotary evaporation and drying in an air-circulating oven. Antibacterial activity was determined by the disk diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar at different concentrations, using bacterial inocula of 10⁸ CFU/ml. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was established by microdilution in tryptic soy broth. The in vitro results showed that the aqueous extract inhibited bacterial growth by 33%, 60%, and 42% at 4 mg/ml, while the hydroalcoholic extract (50:50) showed 67% inhibition. These findings confirm the antibacterial activity of C. sativum, suggesting its pharmacological potential and possible application in the development of natural therapeutic agents for the control of bacterial infections, contributing to the search for alternatives to antimicrobial resistance
