Participatory action research for sustainable tourism in the post-conflict reconstruction of Ukrainian communities

Abstract

With the advent of a peace agreement between the warring parties soon, the process of rebuilding Ukrainian communities affected by the war requires creative social scientists who can deploy their theoretical and methodological repertoire in the service of regenerating the social fabric, which has been severely damaged by the conflict. In line with this thinking, the objective of this research was to reflect (epistemologically) on participatory action research (PAR) as a useful sociological tool for promoting sustainable tourism in the post-conflict reconstruction of Ukrainian communities affected by the war. To achieve this objective, a bibliographic research design was developed, anchored in the domains of critical and gnoseological reflection. In conclusion, it is argued that, apart from gathering emic information, PAR becomes a political and ethical act, a way for marginalized voices to express themselves and actively and personally reinterpret their own traumas and desires for the reconstruction of their spaces of coexistence.
