Abstract

We studied six Venezuelan Andean streams with the following objectives: 1) To describe the diets of various invertebrate taxa and 2) To identify the trophic groups in the assemblage. We selected 6 streams between the foothills and the lower montane of the Capaz River watershed. In each stream, 6 leaf litter patches were collected and the invertebrates were identified to the genus level. About 36 taxa were dissected and gut content analyzed. We identified 10 food categories: fine particulate organic matter (MOPF), coarse particulate organic matter (MOPG), amorphous organic matter (MOA), mineral material (MMN), animal remains (RAN), fungi (HON), pollen (POL ), algae (ALG), diatoms (DIA) and miscellaneous (MIS). The cluster analysis showed the formation of 3 groups and 3 subgroups that presented significant differences between them (ANOSIM; R =0.929; p = 0.0001). Based on the analyses, 5 trophic guilds were formed: shredders (13.9%), predators (15.7%); collector-gatherer (20.0%), collector-shredders (21.5%) and collector-scrapers (28.9%). The most abundant trophic group corresponded to collector generalist (31.7%). This group was followed by collector-shredders (30.3%), predators (11.4%) and specialist shredders (9.2%). Shredders-specialists and collectors-shredders accounted for 39.5% of the total abundance of the shredder detritivore invertebrate assemblage. These results highlight the trophic importance of the shredder guild in tropical rivers and coincide with the results of several previous studies.
