Abstract

Protein biomarkers are related to everyday infections. The use of these allows early diagnosis and treatment, which benefits the patient. They must be easy to measure, technically not complex, low cost and detect the disease / process studied with high sensitivity and specificity. The objective of the present study was to determine the prognostic value of protein biomarkers in the evolution of infections of different etiology. A documentary design investigation was carried out with a search for information in scientific databases such as PubMed, Elsevier, Google Scholar, SciELO, Scopus and Web of Science until February 2021 to identify studies that document the search terms: protein biomarkers, evolution clinic and infections, using Boolean operators. It was found that among the most widely used protein biomarkers they are still C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT), although there are other biomarkers that fulfill a similar function, however, there is still not enough evidence on their prognostic value. When comparing the use of protein biomarkers with other types of biomarkers, it is concluded that they are of great diagnostic help in emergency situations and sepsis, especially when intensive care units are required
