Abstract

To evaluate the impact of silvopastoral systems (SSP) on the yield of edible biomass, dry matter consumption and milk production in dairy herds in the Andean Region of Ecuador, this research was developed. Three agroecosystems (AES) were studied; AES 1 and 2 contained Alnus acuminata H.B.K (Aliso) and Acacia melanoxylon R.Br. (Acacia), respectively, in association with the herbaceous stratum, and the AES, grasses only. The effect of year and AES on edible biomass yield and DM consumption was determined using a multifactorial ANOVA with interaction. Dairy production was analyzed using a least squares method. The yield of edible biomass was higher (P< 0.05) in AES 1, in the first and second years, and dry matter consumption in AES 1 during the three years. Milk production in the first year did not differ significantly between the AES but in the second year it was higher (P< 0.05) in AES 1 and in the third year in AES 1 and 2. The means of adjusted milk production were higher (P< 0.05) in the cows of AES 1 and In the three years the total milk production was higher in AES 1. It is concluded that AES 1 and 2 favored the yield of edible biomass, but in AES 1 dry matter consumption and milk production and its efficiency were higher.
