Abstract

Reproductive biotechnology is increasingly used in animal production. The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), native to the Andes, has increased its importance as a species of zootechnical interest globally due to the high quality of its meat. Within its production, reproduction management seeks reproductive optimization based on estrus synchronization. The research aimed to generate a protocol for synchronization and grouping of estrus in guinea pigs by using two doses of PGF, evaluate the effect on the calving percentage (PP) and litter size (NCP). The research was carried out in the southern region of the Andean tropics of Ecuador. Four treatments were structured with eight animals (449 g live weight and 3 months of age) distributed randomly, being: T0 without PGF; T1, T2 and T3 with injection of 0.04 mg of prostaglandin F intramuscularly on day 0 and a second equal dose on day 7, 9 and 11 in that order. The variable response percentage of estrus synchronization (PSC) was determined by the absence of vaginal membrane, for subsequent mating controlled for 3 days; PP and NCP were recorded postpartum. For statistical analyses, the chi–square tests and the Kruskal–Wallis H test were applied. In T3, 100% synchronization was found at 48 hours and a PP of 87.5% and a NCP of 2.6 were obtained (P<0.05), no effect was found in T1 and T2. The use of a double dose of PGF (0.04 mg intramuscular) with an interval of 11 days synchronizes and concentrates estrus with an efficient PP and NCP.
