Tracking and focus location of the Lynxacarus radovskyi mite in cats (Felis catus) from the state of La Guaira, Venezuela
Abstract
A field survey (in situ investigation) was carried out in a population of 100 adult cats (Felis catus), of mixed breed, from the La Fundación and Las Veguitas urbanizations, located in the parish of Catia La Mar, in the state of La Guaira, Venezuela; to look for the mite Lynxacarus radovskyi. 100 cats were randomly chosen, 83 domestic cats (indoor) with guardians and 17 free–living or street cats (outdoor) to carry out this study, of which 36 were males and 64 females. The complementary examination selected for this study was the trichogram. The sampling areas in the body area taken into account were those with or without lesions of alopecia or inflammation, mostly ventral and dorsal to the neck, armpit area, inguinal, dorsal area of the thorax, pelvis, base of the tail and region perianal. The samples were placed on slide sheets and impregnated with mineral oil to be visualized under the microscope with a 4×/0.10 achromatic initial magnification objective. For greater anatomical definition in the presence of the ectoparasite or its eggs, the 10×/0.25 achromatic objective was used. During the search, eight cats (5 males and 3 females) positive for the L. radovskyi mite and their eggs could be observed. A male cat and 2 females had co–infestation with the cat louse Felicola subrostratus, with their respective nits present in the hair. Only three of five infested cats had pink mucous membranes with dermatological lesions on the face, dorsal neck and lumbar region, with hypotrichosis, erythema, scabs, alopecia with scales and pruritus 5/10. Treatment with Fluralaner was effective in eliminating the mite monitored for 21 days. This is the first report in Venezuela of the feline mite L. radovskyi in cats.
