Determination of antibiotic residues in raw bovine milk marketed in dairies of the Department of Cordillera, Paraguay. Technical note
Abstract
Milk is one of the basic foods in the diet of people of all ages; like any other food, it should be safe and free of antibiotic residues above the limits allowed by legislation. The present work was carried out with the objective of determining the frequency of antibiotic residues in raw bovine milk, marketed in dairy farms in the cities of Atyrá and Caacupé, both in the department of Cordillera, Paraguay, in the year 2022, using the qualitative method of the diffusion test and the MilkSafe™ 3BTC antibiotic test. For this purpose, milk samples were taken from 14 points of sale in the city of Atyrá and 13 in the city of Caacupé. Three samples were taken per point in 3 different periods, totaling 81 samples of raw bovine milk. The results obtained showed that, of the total number of milk samples analyzed, 81 % (66 samples) were negative for antibiotic residues and 19 % (15 samples) were positive for antibiotic residues. Regarding the frequency of residues by city, in Atyrá, of the 42) samples collected, 83 % (35) tested negative for residues, while 17 % (7) were positive. In the city of Caacupé, of the total of thirty–nine (39) samples, 79 % (31) were negative and 21 % (8) were positive. It was concluded that the presence of antibiotic residues in raw bovine milk is an important finding.
