Bacterial susceptibility profile in Staphylococcus spp. strains isolated from canines with otitis externa
Abstract
External otitis is an inflammation of the external auditory canal, which generally affects canines, its causes can be multiple. The objective of this research was to determine the bacterial susceptibility profile in Staphylococcus spp. strains, present in canines affected by otitis externa. The methodology initially used was the identification of affected canines, taking into account their signs and symptoms (pain on palpation, erythema, edema, hypersecretion, pruritus, edema), then a sample of atrial secretion from one ear was taken from each one using a sterile swab, which were seeded on agar base with 5% defibrinated sheep blood, and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. As results we obtained that of the 46 samples collected from patients with a history of external otitis, it was possible to isolate 65.21% of Staphylococcus spp. Regarding the sensitivity and resistance profile, the strains isolated in this study showed greater sensitivity to Gentamicin (100%), followed by Doxycillin (96.67%) and Cefoxitin (90%). Among the antimicrobials that presented the highest resistance in vitro were Erythromycin (26.66%), followed by Clindamycin (23.33%) and Levofloxacin (23.33). Considering the degree of resistance to families of antibiotics, Lincosamides (23.33%), Macrolides (21.66%), Fluoroquinolones (16.66%) developed greater resistance in vitro. Culture and antibiogram become a fundamental tool for successful antimicrobial therapy and avoid the development of multiresistant strains.
