Radio programming on venezuelan oil industry stations
Abstract
This article analyzes the radio programming on stations belonging to the Venezuelan oil industry. It is based on the theoretical frameworks of Mariano Cebrián (1983) and Arturo Merayo (2000). Methodologically, it is a descriptive documentary study. Data collection techniques include direct observation of the programming broadcast by each station within the PDVSA Radio Network. In Venezuela, radio emerged in 1926 and began its development as an industry in 1930. In the early 1980s, the first institutional FM concessions were granted to private individuals and the oil industry. By 2015, the number of stations belonging to the Venezuelan oil industry exceeded ten nationwide. However, very little is known about its operation. There are no concrete examples worldwide of open-signal radio stations operated by an industry dedicated to activities other than the use and operation of telecommunications media or systems. Therefore, it could be argued that Venezuela is a pioneer in this model. However, both the programming schedule and the programs of the oil industry's institutional radio stations, instead of adhering to the principles upon which they were founded, are evident as government propaganda tools. It was also observed that the concessions granted to the industry between 1982 and 1997 established organizational principles aligned with the nature of institutional broadcasters
