Abstract

Celiac disease (CD) is a genetically based autoimmune condition, as it develops in susceptible people in response to gluten exposure. The global prevalence is estimated at 1 person per 100, which may vary depending on the geographic area. It presents with intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations, which are not specific and requires a high degree of suspicion. In addition, it may be associated with other autoimmune diseases. The classic symptoms are due to intestinal malabsorption, with a good response to a gluten-free diet. The extra-digestive clinical spectrum is very broad with hematological, neurological, dermatological, oral, dental, liver, among others. It should be known that Diabetes mellitus type 1 and autoimmune thyroiditis are associated pathologies, where the diagnosis is crucial.
