Professional musicians in Monterrey: Precariousness and Contingent Work

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the work trajectories of musicians who are part of  the  creative  and  cultural  industries  in  the  metropolitan  area  of   Monterrey.    A methodological design of qualitative approach was applied by collecting through interviews the narratives of life stories of the professional musician resident of the city of Monterrey. The main results detected unstable behaviors in their lifestyles, such as multiemployment and labor precariousness. The contribution of this study consisted in identifying who these musicians are, what their professional careers are like, as well as the understanding of the opportunities, difficulties and limitations they face to achieve a balance between economic and personal fulfillment. It was concluded that this group of artists faces a series of contingencies during the processes that occur from the beginning of their professional careers to their insertion into the labor market.
