Sobre la dieta y comportamiento defensivo en serpientes Micrurus Wagler 1824 (Squamata: Elapidae) del Chocó Biogeográfico, Colombia
On the diet and defensive behavior in Micrurus Wagler 1824 snakes (Squamata: Elapidae), from the Chocó Biogeographic region, Colombia
Abstract
We report field observations on aspects of the diet and defensive behavior of two species and subspecies of the genus Micrurus Wagler, 1824 (M. dumerilii transandinus Schmidt, 1936 and M. ancoralis jani Schmidt, 1936) from the Chocó Biogeographic region of northwestern Colombia. We document snake consumption by M. d. transandinus, including an unidentified species of the family Dipsadidae and an event of interspecific predation on a juvenile M. a. jani, evidenced by the complete regurgitation of the prey following manipulation of the predator. Additionally, we provide the first record of M. a. jani preying upon a specimen of Caecilia guntheri Dunn, 1942, as well as an event involving the consumption of another unidentified caecilian species of the genus Caecilia Linnaeus, 1758, suggesting that these amphibians may constitute an important component of its We also describe defensive behaviors in both species, including a defensive maneuver not previously reported for Micrurus ancoralis ( Jan, 1872). Collectively, these observations contribute to the knowledge of the natural history, trophic ecology, and defensive behavior of poorly known Micrurus species from the Colombian Chocó Biogeographic region.
