Perception of the Level of Neurophobia in Medical Students

Keywords: Neurology, medical students, neurophobia, teaching, education

Abstract

An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out through a virtual questionnaire to medical students at the Manuel Fajardo Faculty of Medical Sciences, Havana, Cuba; in the period between the months of May - July 2023. A sample of 50 students was studied. The Chi – Square test was used to identify associations between ordinal qualitative variables. 52% of students considered neurology to be a difficult field. A medium level of security (more or less self-confident) prevailed when caring for neurological patients (52%). The majority of students consider that they have a good level of knowledge about neurology (42%). 38% of students have cared for patients with neurological conditions on very few occasions. 86% of students have not carried out research in the area of neurology. Multiple studies have been carried out in different countries corroborating the existence of neurophobia in medical students, which have some correspondence with the results obtained. It can be concluded that the frequency of neurophobia in students is low compared to what is reported worldwide.
