The corpus luteum produces progesterone, an essential hormone for the maintenance of early pregnancy. Transvaginal Doppler ultrasound allows the evaluation of the corpus luteum in a non-invasive way. Objective: to relate the ultrasonographic Doppler characteristics of the corpus luteum with the outcome of pregnancy in the first trimester. Design: descriptive, prospectivestudy. Marco: “Consultorios Médicos Tamare”, Mara, Zulia State, Venezuela. Method: study of thirty patients with single pregnancies between weeks 6 and 9 of gestation, by transvaginal ultrasound the size of the corpus luteum, echographic aspect, resistance index and maximum systolic velocity were measured. Results: The corpus luteum was visualized in 29 (98%) patients, with average size ± SD of 1.9 ± 0.6 cm, average resistance index 0.50 ± 0.08 and maximum systolic velocity of 20.5 ± 11.2 cm/seg. There was favorable evolution in 23 (76.6%) patients and 7 (23.3%) patients culminated in spontaneous losses, the comparison between both groups of patients did not show significant differences in the average size of the corpus luteum, mean resistance index, systolic velocity maximum. Conclusion: There is no relationship between these ultrasonographicDoppler characteristics of the corpus luteum and the outcome of pregnancy in the first trimester.
