La investigación realizada por la Superintendencia Nacional de Educación encontró que el 27% de los estudiantes que acceden a los estudios universitarios abandonan durante el primer año. El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar qué factores internos y externos permiten a los nuevos estudiantes adaptarse con éxito al entorno universitario. Para esta investigación mixta, participaron estudiantes de primer año de la Universidad Católica de Santa María (Arequipa-Perú). Se aplicó un cuestionario con preguntas cerradas a 168 estudiantes y se trabajó un grupo focal con 32 participantes. El análisis de contenido se realizó mediante un proceso de codificación abierta de tres etapas para clasificar los encontrado en temas. Los hallazgos muestran cuatro factores que intervinieron para la adaptación exitosa en el entorno universitario: Metodología de enseñanza y evaluación docente, sistema de orientación y tutoría, identificación de vocación profesional y redes sociales de actividades extracurriculares, en tanto 8 de cada 10 estudiantes presentaron dificultades para lograrlo, obteniendo bajo rendimiento en uno o mas cursos en el primer año. Se concluye, que el apoyo familiar, competencias adquiridas en la secundaria, desempeño, ayudan en la adaptación universitaria.</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p class="abstract">Peru’s higher education faces a high dropout rate and a low retention rate. Research carried out by the National Superintendency of Education found that 27% of the students who enter university studies drop out during the first year. The objective of this research is to determine what internal and external factors allow new students to successfully adapt to the university environment. For this mixed investigation, first-year students from the Catholic University of Santa María (Arequipa-Peru) participated. A questionnaire with closed questions was applied to 168 students and a focus group with 32 participants was worked. Content analysis was performed using a three-stage open coding process to classify those found into topics. The findings show four factors that intervened for successful adaptation in the university environment: Teaching methodology and teacher evaluation, guidance and tutoring system, identification of professional vocation and social networks of extracurricular activities, while 8 out of 10 students presented difficulties in achieve this, obtaining low performance in one or more courses in the first year.
