First Record of Fraser’s Dolphin, Lagenodelphis hosei, in the Gulf of Venezuela
Abstract
For the first time, the presence of a Fraser’s Dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) (Fraser, 1956) is reported in the Gulf of Venezuela, through the finding of bone remains on 8 August 2012. The bones were found on Zapara Island (10°59’30.80” N-71°34’28.20”W), which is located between the Gulf of Venezuela and Tablazo Bay, State of Zulia, on the western coast of Venezuela. The identification was confirmed through comparison of their morphometric and meristic measurements with those registered worldwide for this species. This is the second record of the species for the Venezuelan coast and the third record for the southeastern Caribbean.
