Dr. Américo Negrette, founder of the IIC and his team of pioneer researchers, sent various cohort of privileged students that grew as scientists with the same enthusiasm as their mentors in prestigious institutions. We have the honor to describe a representative sample of three outstanding researchers, who had their initial scientific training at the IIC and currently hold important administrative positions abroad, linked to their research activity. They are José Esparza, Hermes Flórez and Germán Áñez. José Esparza, obtained his PhD in Virology from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Until today he has continuously escalating relevant positions on the field of virology research such as the WHO Director of vaccines, team researcher on the HIV program from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, researcher consultant on viral vaccines of important universities and health organizations. Esparza is author of numerous publications of global impact and summarizes his research activity in one sentence: “a passion for virology that began at IIC 56 years ago is still alive”. Hermes Flórez, obtained a Master degree in Public Health and PhD in Epidemiology, at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He has held several leadership positions: Director of the postgraduate program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Head of the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine and Director of the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health, Director of the Center for Excellence in Research, Education and Geriatric Clinical Care (GRECC). Hermes has more than 150 journal publications and serves as a reviewer for several of them. Germán Áñez, completed his studies in viral molecular biology in the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Health (NIH) in Besthesda, USA, and in the Laboratory of Emerging Pathogens, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, USA. He has been deserving several awards for extraordinary scientific achievements in the viral diseases field. He is currently Global Director of Clinical Sciences, Research and Development of Sanofi Pasteur. During these 60 years, the IIC has gained importance and recognition for its research activities and as a training institution for excellent scientists that help and contributes to the solution of health problems for wellbeing and quality of life of the population.
